Warsaw Overview

Set in the heart of Poland, Warsaw is a city that really needs time to be fully appreciated. Almost completely rebuilt from the late 1940's onwards, Warsaw initially appears quite straightforward and plain when viewed from the airport, but hidden beneath this first glance are buildings of outstanding beauty and architectural quality. Also hidden from first view are the buzzing nightclubs and bars, where the young people of Warsaw go to party.

As the country's centre for both educational and cultural development, it is a city with a real heart. In addition to the Polish Academy for Science it is home to the national philharmonic orchestra and national opera companies, as well as a great number of smaller theatres and companies. Art and culture is a very strong part of the city.

Warsaw is in many ways a real contrast as the space is shared between the historical old buildings and the new developments that are taking the city into the future. Part of these new developments are business focused, bringing financial prosperity back to the area, and to reflect that prosperity is the burgeoning growth of retail areas, where this new wealth can be spent. From ultra modern designer items through to historically based souvenirs everything can be found in this city of contrasts.

When travelling to Warsaw it is wise to consider the extremes of weather that can be experienced, so the best times to travel are between May and October, when it isn't too cold.
