Vilnius Overview

Vilnius is the capital city of Lithuania and has a population of around 580,000 people. It is a very historical city, with documented evidence of it going back to the 12th century and this is a key part of all Vilnian's upbringing, ensuring this wonderful heritage is not lost over time.

Indicative of the areas long history is the prevalence of amber, one of the earths oldest substances and can be found here as part of jewellery or as an interesting piece on its own, sometimes with a fossil inside.

For entertainment Vilnius is a fantastic destination. Every interest is catered for, although some clubs are a little hard to find as they are not heavily promoted in the mainstream areas. As a contrast visit the city during one of their festivals, which are often based on religion but do include the Pagan rituals that Vilnius originally followed in the earliest days of its history.

The city has proved to be a popular destination for Stag and Hen Weekends owing to it's low prices and variety of nightlife. Of course there are many other facets to this wonderful city but it does make a terrific party destination.

A fascinating point of note is that the geographical centre of Europe is very close to Vilnius, being less than 25 km to the north. Now who would have thought that?

Top Vilnius Attractions

Although the city has a wonderful history and heritage it is also embracing current trends too, and has a wonderful variety of clubs where you can find every possible form of entertainment to suit your needs. Not always easy to find, some of these clubs are based very much on word of mouth promotion with the venues themselves sometimes changing overnight. These are a real contrast to the many churches and religious icons that make up the majority of the daytime attractions in the city.

Shopping in Vilnius

Visit both the Akropolis and Europa Mall, where you will find a really modern shopping experience, contrasting dramatically with the historical aspects of the city. Maintaining the historical elements are the many markets you will find around - offering all the different local produce as well as hand made goods to take back as a fond reminder of your trip.

Vilnius Sporting Events

Fishing is a popular sport in Vilnius and makes the ideal antidote following a busy day/night in the city. In addition, catering for the wide variety of visitors to this destination there are all the usual adrenaline sports available too - bungee jumping, freefalling, quadbiking and skiing in season.
