Thessaloniki Overview

Thessaloniki is the second largest city in Greece and, with a history dating back to around 2000BC offers a fascinating look at the worlds development over that time, with the varied elements that remain here from the past.

The city itself is split into two main parts, the Old Town and the Modern Area, which are pretty self-explanatory. The Old Town is where the cultural history of Thessaloniki can be found, housing as it does a large collection of museums and buildings that have been here since ancient times.

The Modern Area is where the main commercial areas can be found as well as the majority of bars and clubs. The city works hard at maintaining a balance and this division between the new and the traditional is a part of that. There is space for a romantic stroll in the moonlight, with a more relaxed atmosphere or by going to another part of the city it can become louder and more brash, but always there is that divide, enabling each visitor to get what they want from the experience.

Thessaloniki is an amazing city to visit as it has so much detail to offer the visitor. Caring as it does for the past as much as the future, it is a place that offers a real insight into how the modern world was created yet doesn't forget the needs of people in today's world.

Top Thessaloniki Attractions

The Old Town is where the majority of attractions are to be found, and it is here where the best known of them is situated. The White Tower, built in the 15th century, has a pretty gruesome history but is now home to all manner of artefacts relating to the city and its background. There are also a variety of different museums to visit, each concentrating on a different era so that, by visiting each of them a full picture can be built up of how the city has evolved over this long period of time.

Shopping in Thessaloniki

As with the rest of the city, the shopping experience is no different. Bringing with it a wonderful diversity of styles and products there is something for the traditionalist as well as the modernista. From specialist shops offering authentic Greek wares through to designer boutiques and big department stores, everyone is catered for.

Thessaloniki Sporting Events

PAOK PC is Thessaloniki's football club and is pretty successful in the Greek First Division. Visitors to the clubs ground on match day will find one of the most fanatical group of supporters in Europe; an experience that will really stir the emotions. Many other sports are popular here, with particular interest in weightlifting and wrestling, areas that are somewhat traditional to the Greeks.
