Travel guide to Stockholm, Sweden with comprehensive information about events, shopping, and major Stockholm sporting events to help you enjoy your visit more.

Stockholm Overview

Stockholm is the capital of Sweden, located on the country's east coast. Being built upon 14 different islands it is often referred to as the Venice of the North. Interestingly it seems that the city splits very neatly into three equally sized areas, one third is water, one third is urban and the last third is made up of parks, 38 of them to be precise.

The city is home to many of Sweden's major cultural institutions, including museums opera and theatre. It also has two UNESCO World Heritage sites - Drottingham Palace and Skogskyrkogarden which emphasise the overall style and feeling of this city.

The weather is another important part of Stockholm's attraction, enjoying as it does quite a northerly setting. In winter time the city is often cloaked in snow and very short days whilst in summer the opposite applies, with glorious sunshine and almost 24 hour daylight.

For those wishing to take in the culinary delights of Stockholm there are many restaurants to choose from, and a lot of work has gone into making them true experiences, where every aspect is of importance. Take some time to savour what is offered and get a true feel for Stockholm. A recent development here is that all restaurants are now non-smoking, as are cafes and pubs. A smoking room may be provided but no food can be consumed there.

Top Stockholm Attractions

Take a trip to the Old Town - Gamla Stan - some 750 years old and full of narrow streets evocative of a previous era. For those hoping to find love whilst away perhaps a stroll round the aisles of ICA Singel, a singles only supermarket is in order - who knows what you may find there.

Shopping in Stockholm

Swedish design has been globally influential so a visit to their homeland should prove to be very worthwhile, and this is certainly the case. Renowned for clean lines and simplicity there are many outlets here where such well designed household goods and furniture can be found.

Stockholm Sporting Events

Football and Ice Hockey are the most popular sports here, although they do tend to operate almost exclusively in their own national leagues, with little growth into the European environs. Winter sports are a different story though where participants are often seen at world class levels. This is also seen in rallying where it seems the Scandinavian drivers generally have an innate ability to drive a car at breakneck speed in slippery conditions.
