Split Overview
Split, situated on the coast in the south of Croatia is the country's second largest city, with a long history dating back to Roman times. This historical background explains the city's position as Croatia's cultural capital, evolving as it has over so many centuries and experiencing so much. It has always been at the forefront of global development, no doubt based on its geographic location which was very much a gateway between East and West.
With a population of just under 200,000 the city is the second largest in Croatia and has experienced economic ups and downs with the various changes in the regions politics. Currently it is endeavouring to clamber out of difficult times and regain some of its past glories.
Split certainly has a lot to share with visitors interested in its background, with a host of museums providing a wonderfully detailed picture of past times here. The Museum of Croatia, the Museum of Croatian Archaeological Monuments and the Mestrovic Gallery being just some of the must visit places here. Another place that has to be seen, and smelt, are the Sulphur Baths. Built in the early 1900's the baths are still used today to counter ailments. For those not needing such aid the exterior of the building is a fantastic example of Art Nouveau styling.
One of Split's most well known sons is tennis player Goran Ivanisevic, who travels the world on the professional tennis circuit. His success is fuelling a boom in the sport throughout Croatia, inspiring young people to try an emulate his success.
Split then is a city of change, where ideas are born and shared.

Top Split Attractions
Diocletian's Palace is the most well known attraction here, built by the Roman Emperor Diocletian around 300AD. It is the heart around which the rest of Split has been created and is a wonderfully preserved monument that still lives within the city today.
Shopping in Split
There are many open air markets in the city, offering the freshest locally grown produce and also many imported items from the port. These are very popular with the locals and as such enable purchases to be made with confidence. The country's political background impacts quite noticeably on the shopping opportunities offered, leaving the more expensive products out of the equation on the whole.
Split Sporting Events
Tennis is a major growth area since the global success of Goran Ivanisevic. Football is also a very popular sport, with Hadjuk Split being the city's team and receiving very passionate and vocal support. With its coastal location watersports are naturally prominent too - with windsurfing, swimming and sailing being particularly popular.
