Singapore Overview

Singapore is one of 63 islands that make up the Malay Peninsula in South East Asia. The city of Singapore is on the eponymously titled main island and is the capital city for all of them.

Amalgamating so many different styles and cultures as it does, Singapore is a particularly cosmopolitan city that brings something of everyone to its heart. It is the common desire to progress that seems to bind all these different cultures together and hence generate such success and an overall appreciation of individual needs.

Singapore is a major player in the international financial markets, and has a strong economy that has created awesome wealth within the area. To look at the towering, skyscrapers in the financial district, with their wonderfully modern designs, it is easy to appreciate how much money is generated here. Of course there have been ups and downs, with Nick Leeson being probably the most high profile example of this when he managed to bring down Barings Bank. Of course this personifies the whole nature of the "Tiger Economy" as it is known. Nick Leeson was seen as a star performer for such a long time with his audacious style earning his employer many millions of pounds. Only when he faltered was anything said.

As a city of contrasts Singapore has more than most, combining as it does so many cultures and styles in its own inimitable way.

Top Singapore Attractions

With so many wonderful places to see it is difficult to decide on just a few. However definitely consider Istana, the official residence of the President of Singapore. Open only five times a year this is an opportunity not to be missed. Merlion Park is another such must see. A beautiful location in itself it is also where the Merlion ( a combination of fishes body and lions head) is to be found. This quickly became Singapore's icon in the eyes of the world when it was unveiled in the mid 1960's and remains so to this day.

Shopping in Singapore

In Singapore the place to go is Orchard Road, where there are so many shopping malls that repeat visits are a necessity. Here there is every possible shop a person could think of, and in a wonderfully designed setting too.

Singapore Sporting Events

Sport generally is very well promoted in Singapore, as much for general health reasons as anything else. A wide variety of sports are enjoyed here with golf, swimming and badminton quite high up on the list of activities. Taking part is the key aspect here and so is widely encouraged.
