Seville Overview

Located in southern Spain, Seville has a population of some 700,000 people and is perceived as the economic and cultural capital of the area.

It quickly becomes clear here that the city's history is of great importance. It is not that buildings are made into shrines, rather that the buildings and images of the past are totally involved in the modern city style. The old and new are integrated, creating a real bond. It is also relevant that Seville is a port. When the galleons sailed the seas Seville was a supremely well positioned city and as such saw many ships coming here with all manner of cargo. Clearly the city made good money from all this trade and used it to create parts of the city - an investment that has put them to the position they now find themselves.

When it comes to nightlife Seville is a wonderful place to be, offering as it does so many different options - from an evening enjoying traditional Spanish food and Flamenco dancing through to a night of drinking and dancing in one of the many clubs - there is something here for every palette.

As an aside, the famous Seville oranges are actually used for Marmalade rather than eating fresh and the famous fictional lover Don Juan had his home here.

Seville is in some ways the "typical" Spanish city, what with the bullfighting, Flamenco dancers and traditional architecture. However it is certainly no cliché. It is a modern proactive city with a population that embraces its past and enjoys its culture.

Top Seville Attractions

The city of Seville has grown over the years, which is quite useful in that the historical sights are all concentrated in a central area. Situated around the cathedral are the main places to visit - the wonderful gardens of Alcazar, the Giralda bell tower, the Patio de los Naranjos and the cathedral itself.

Shopping in Seville

Seville has its own style when it comes to shopping. The pace is leisurely, with time taken out for coffee at one of the many nearby cafes. Sensibly using the climate as a guide, many shops will close for a few hours in the afternoon, staying open until around 8 in the evening.

Seville Sporting Events

Football is the predominant sport here, with two teams fighting for the city's top spot. Real Betis and Sevilla are the two sides, both of which play in the Spanish first division. Sevilla are the oldest of the clubs but recently Real Betis have been the more successful.
