Savannah Overview

Savannah, Georgia is found in the south of the United States and is one of the oldest cities in America. This is explained primarily by the fact that it was a major port, and with its agricultural background found that it was able to export large quantities of its produce overseas. Cotton was one of Savannah's largest exports so the extent of their wealth and development can easily be imagined when considering the importance of such a crop in the world economy.

The historical background of the city is still important today, with a lot of the traditional architecture remaining and the beautiful squares that were an integral part of its charm still as they were. The overall feeling of this beautiful city is one of space and calm.

As with many southern US cities, Savannah has a large predomination of blues and jazz clubs. It all seems to add to the atmosphere of the place and there are many live performances throughout the city. This cultural aspect of the city is continued through to the many restaurants where a great range of local speciality dishes are available. Seafood is one of the areas favourites but there are also many other traditional foods that have been developed over the years here that are simply delicious.

To make the city of Savannah complete as a destination, or simply a wonderful place to live, it also has some great beaches. Hilton Head, Beaufort and Tybee Island for example.

The place to be is the National Historic Landmark District, where the beautifully maintained squares are extremely popular sites for appreciating the beauty of this city. The theme of this area is one of the past, and the way these areas have been maintained is such that it is easy to imagine being there a hundred years before. Some of the houses themselves are open to explore and see how people lived in that time.

Shopping in Savannah

Savannah offers a tremendous variation of shopping experiences. The Historical District has a plethora of boutiques and galleries where the most elegant shops offer beautiful products. Alternatively in Southside the Savannah and Oglethorpe Malls are to be found. In between there are shops of every description, often seemingly hidden away like jewels. Each has its own merits and all are certainly worthy of closer inspection.

Savannah Sporting Events

Having a semi-tropical environment Savannah can provide all year round sporting enjoyment. Golf is extremely popular here as are watersports, angling and tennis to name but a few. There are around sixty golf courses in the area, inspired no doubt by the proximity of the US Masters, held in Augusta Georgia each year.
