Reno Overview

Lying in the north west of Nevada, Reno has a reputation as a more relaxed and quieter version of Las Vegas. Sharing the gambling culture of its counterpart to the south, there are several large resort casinos in the city, although they are not on the same scale as Vegas.

Reno lies in the shadows of the Nevada Mountains; close to the resort town of Lake Tahoe, and this proximity with the wilds have painted it as a great city to visit for people looking for a more unusual holiday experience.

If you plan to combine the comforts of a resort break with a few days activity in the mountains, then Reno is a great place in which to base yourself, and with the stunning scenery and great weather throughout much of the year, it makes a great destination.

Offering a rich mix of culture, Reno is often described as a more upmarket Las Vegas, and with theatres, museums and art galleries, along with a great live music scene and state of the art cinemas, there is something for everyone in the city.

Top Reno Attractions

When Reno was the main gambling city in America, it had more casinos than anywhere else, but with the rise of Vegas, many of the smaller venues closed down, and now there are a small number of large casino hotels providing a mix of entertainment and gambling.

While the wedding chapel industry of Las Vegas has seen the city become known as the marriage capital of the USA, the similar preponderance of lawyers in Reno has seen Reno become better known for divorce. In addition to this, Reno has a number of well known "cat houses" that have seen it develop a unique tourist industry.

Shopping in Reno

In Reno itself, the shopping experience you can expect is typically American, with a wide range of stores selling the usual mix of fashions and ornamentation - along with some great souvenirs of the city.

There is an Indian reserve in the centre of Reno where you can purchase some great traditional handicrafts such as wampum beads, and if you head out to Carson City, or even the outskirts of Reno itself, there are a number of small galleries selling paintings of the area.

Reno Sporting Events

Lake Tahoe is one of America's top winter sports destinations, and during the main season, offers skiing, snow boarding, and all the other exciting mountain sports you could want.

In summer, the resort town is also busy, and the region is popular with rock climbers, hikers, and campers who descend on the region to enjoy the mixture of amazing scenery and challenging terrain that it is famous for.
