Pisa Travel Guide
Travel guide to Pisa, Italy with comprehensive information about events, shopping, and major Pisa sporting events to help you enjoy your visit more.
Pisa Overview
Pisa in northern Italy is renowned for its leaning tower. Built in the 14th century it has stood as a landmark since then, with its angle causing consternation for many years as people thought it would topple. Work has been done recently to prevent this happening which should see the tower remain as a global icon for years to come.
The city has a population of around 85,000 people, which is about right for a relatively small city. Being located as it is in the Tuscany region there is a lot of natural beauty to be found here, with lovely hills and fields, dotted with traditional farmhouses. This generates the majority of the areas income - partially from farming with the rest from tourism, and as time goes on it is the tourism that is becoming more dominant.
The breadth of things to do here is marvellous, with nearby beaches offering an alternative from the more rustic styles. There are also many different sports and leisure pursuits here, from cycling, horse riding and golf to wine making, painting and archery.
Visitors to Pisa will be struck by how beautiful the whole area is. From the defining architecture around the city through to the natural beauty of the surrounding areas it is all so idyllic. It is also a place where heritage counts for so much and seems to still be a major part of the city.

Top Pisa Attractions
The leaning tower of Pisa is by far the most well known aspect of the city, although there are many more that deserve attention. The tower itself is one of four buildings in the Campo dei Miracoli, the others being the Santa Maria Assunta Cathedral, the baptistry and the Campsanto cemetery.
Shopping in Pisa
Pisa, as a tourist destination, has worked hard at fulfilling visitors needs by offering many local products. So handcrafted items are popular here - such as wood carvings, lace and jewellery. Naturally, as with any Italian city there is the availability of high fashion too, but in this city it is somewhat secondary to the needs of the tourist trade.
Pisa Sporting Events
As with the rest of Italy football is a passion here. Although Pisa are not in Serie A, the highest Italian league they still have a strong following. Other sporting interests here are more about taking part and tend to be more leisurely - cycling and walking for example. This tends to reflect the nature of Pisa.
