Norfolk Overview
The US city of Norfolk is in the state of Virginia and is one of its largest cities, with a population of approximately 235,000 people and growing. Located on the Elizabeth River it has long been a key US Navy Base as the area creates its own natural harbour and it is an ideal location for setting out into the Atlantic. In fact Norfolk is the largest Naval Base in the United States.
Currently the city is undergoing a structured programme of regeneration, creating more businesses around it and bringing more people to the city. It is already a multi-cultural city, with many different neighbourhoods that are synonymous with particular ethnic groups, each bringing a taste of their culture to Norfolk.
As befits a melting pot of different cultures and styles, Norfolk has a wonderful nightlife, with so many restaurants here offering flavours from around the globe, live music every night, from blues, cajun, rock and dance through to classical and opera. For those just wishing to see what's happening there are many bars and clubs in the city, each with its own style and all popular.

Top Norfolk Attractions
The naval theme is a popular one here, so a visit to the Hampton Roads Naval Museum is high on the agenda, including as it does the USS Wisconsin, a battleship that is free to explore. For something a little different try the Chrysler Museum of Art with its outstanding collections as well as varied new displays there is much to see here.
Shopping in Norfolk
The McArthur Center in the heart of downtown is a focal point for shoppers, offering as it does over 140 different outlets, many restaurants and an 18 screen cinema. Always popular the day flies by here, with so much to see and do. The more specialist shops are found away from the centre, with antiques being particularly well represented.
Norfolk Sporting Events
Although not represented in the Major Leagues, there are a number of Minor League teams that are well supported here - the Norfolk Admirals in Ice Hockey and the Tides in Baseball. In addition there are many sports activities available, including sailing, cycling and golf, which is extremely popular.
