Naples Overview
Many people arrive in Naples expecting a beautiful village by the sea, perhaps visualising a church or two, a few lazy piazzas where they can sit at pavement cafes drinking wine and eating pasta. They are of course utterly disappointed by what they find when they arrive.
Naples is the third largest city in Italy; home to around 1 million people, and is a place dedicated to business as much as pleasure, Naples is a city that has a harbour and industrial areas by the sea front and has shiny office blocks soaring above the pollution of the main streets. Away from the commercial districts, and eventually you do find the Naples you wished for, a provincial city complete with plenty of churches, a medieval university, and of course, all the pavement cafes you could possibly need. Not far outside the city centre, there are lovely beaches to sunbathe on, and inland, the rolling countryside is most picturesque and ideal for walking or driving through.
The area around the city is no less than picture perfect: a delight for visitors looking for an escape from the bustle of the city, a place where you can revel in the open air and soak up the gentle pace of Italian life in wonderful surroundings.

Top Naples Attractions
Aside from the traditional tourist attractions of Naples itself, within driving distance, of the city, you can wander along the famous Amalfi Coast to see attractions including Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Mount Vesuvius the volcano that destroyed them both. Not far from Naples, Sorrento is a great place to stay for a few days and has some stunning scenery and great hotels.
Shopping in Naples
As the third largest city in Italy, and its most important port, Naples is a major retail centre, and offers visitors the chance to buy goods at low prices in the large warehouse size outlet stores around the city. Aside from the usual Italian staples of clothes and sun glasses, you can also get great deals on food and wine in Naples - particularly the locally caught seafood and local wines.
Naples Sporting Events
Napoli were once the biggest football team in Italy - counting Diego Maradona amongst their alumni, and boasting an 80,000 seat stadium - the Stadio San Paolo. Although the team's glory days seem long gone, their struggle to recapture the championships and titles they once had still attracts the fans, and despite a complete lack of success in the last few years, they still get large numbers of punters following them at home matches.
