Murcia Overview

Murcia is to be found in southern Spain situated in the heart of the fertile plains area of the country. The climate here can be quite severe, with scorching heat in the summer but snow in the winter at times. It is always relatively dry though, with very little rain all year long.

This climate makes agriculture a significant part of the area, with fruit and vegetables grown here exported throughout Europe. This economic strength as enabled the city to grow, albeit not dramatically, but enough to maintain the city as the people want it to be. It has the feel in many ways of a small town, with an atmosphere that is welcoming.

The religious festivals that make up much of the Spanish culture are as prevalent here as anywhere else in the country and are a major part of the city's life. They bring together the passion of the Spanish people with a real belief in what they are doing that creates the most wonderful atmosphere for visitors. Holy Week is probably the most evocative, utilising as it does works of art that are carried round the streets. Where else would that happen?

The city of Murcia is a delightful place to visit, where there is no particular rush about things as life goes on. Get into step with the locals and feel the stress wash away, it really is a place to chill out and relax.

Top Murcia Attractions

The wonderful architecture plays a key role in the style of the city, with the cathedral standing out with its variety of styles owing to the time it took to actually complete work on it. Work began here in 1394 but was not finished until 1792! The Glorieta is another delightful place to see. This traditional centre of the city is a lovely landscaped square.

Shopping in Murcia

The city offers a variety of shopping options, from the traditional small shops selling locally produced goods through to the boutiques that spring up around any city and the big shopping malls, with everything under one roof. A lot of the shopping areas in Murcia are pedestrianised which makes for a much more pleasant and relaxed time.

Murcia Sporting Events

The city has a couple of football teams although neither are in the top Spanish league. They do have a significant following though and offer a release of emotions for the supporters watching on a Saturday. Other sports are enjoyed here, with cycling being quiet popular as well as golf with the famous La Manga golf club nearby.
