Munich Overview

Munich is the third largest city in Germany, with a population of 1.4 million people and is most famous for the Oktoberfest beer festival, hosting the Olympics in 1972 and the football team Bayern Munich. However there is so much more to this city.

It is, for example, regularly rated in the top 10 cities in the world for quality of life, with a strong economy, low pollution, a low crime rate and excellent transportation systems.

With regard to nightlife there is a real feeling of enjoyment here. With café bars all over the city and restaurants offering every conceivable dish from around the world it is a place to spend some time just relaxing and taking time out. And as the night goes on the bars and clubs welcome visitors to sing and dance the night away.

Munich is also a culturally rich city, having as it does a whole host of museums and galleries, covering a wide variety of interests: the Museum of Mankind and Nature and the Deutsches Museum for example, which is the largest science and industry museum in Europe. The Lenbachhaus Gallery is another great place to visit, housing a fantastic collection of Expressionist paintings.

Around the city the architectural style is magnificent, offering as it does a combination of 17th century baroque designs with some more contemporary works in the modern areas of the city.

Munich is a delightful city to visit because it defies a lot of the preconceptions regarding it. The glorious architecture, the warm, friendly people and the broad accessibility to fantastic pieces of art and history are something that should be experienced by everyone. The city is not just about beer and that becomes clear the more you look.

Munich Sporting Events

The city has a famous football club, and the most successful in Germany. The club is Bayern Munich, a team that have been pretty much constant figures in the Champions League, and one of the European games iconic teams. There are a couple of lesser teams in the city but their profile is very much in the shadow of the mighty Bayern.
