Moscow Travel Guide
Travel guide to Moscow, Russia with comprehensive information about events, shopping, and major Moscow sporting events to help you enjoy your visit more.
Moscow Overview
Moscow is the capital of Russia and with a population of over 10 million people the largest city in Europe. It has a dramatic history, involved as it has been in the majority of world events since medieval times.
The iconic Kremlin and Red Square are of great cultural importance to the whole of Russia, let alone just Moscow. They are a reminder of the power the country once had as an enormous Communist state, which has now been dissipated through the break up of the Soviet Union.
The influence of western culture has had a great impact on Moscow, with the prominent brand names coming to the city in order to create the consumer culture and free economy that stimulates financial growth. Some Russians embraced this wholeheartedly, making themselves fortunes in the process, but others have been left behind, creating a sub-culture that exists on the periphery of Moscow society.
As a modern city then, Moscow has a lot to offer the visitor. All the best brands are here for shopping in style, there are many places to eat and drink, and the nightlife here is fantastic, with clubs everywhere that offer every form of entertainment you can think of.

Top Moscow Attractions
Red Square and The Kremlin are the best known places in the city, having been seen for many years holding military parades. Red Square is seen as the very epicentre of Moscow, and for many Russians the centre of the country too. The Kremlin is the official residence of the Russian president and stands as a magnificent fortified complex of buildings facing Red Square.
Shopping in Moscow
Moscow provides many contrasts in its shopping. The highest quality brands are all to be found here, and the shopping areas are beautifully ornate and elegant. Go to some of the markets though, like the Old Arbat, and the quality and elegance fades away, to be replaced by an eagerness to part tourists from their money, with tacky souvenirs being a staple product.
Moscow Sporting Events
Football is the primary sport here, and with four successful teams in the city there are obvious rivalries between supporters. The local teams are CSKA, Dynamo, Spartak and Lokomotiv. CSKA Moscow are the stars of the Moscow footballing stage at the moment, recently winning the UEFA Cup.
