Mexico City Overview

Mexico City, the capital of Mexico is reputed to be the largest city in the world. It is unbelievably large, spreading out as it does to incorporate several "districts". Surrounded on three sides by towering mountains it is a dramatic sight, with the sprawl of the city inhabited by around 18 million people, although this is estimated since to count them all is a gargantuan task.

The city has a long history and as such is filled with reminders of these earlier times, so museums abound here, as do the many different styles of architecture that have been employed over the years and retained while the city has grown around it. To travel around Mexico City is to see the history of the world such is the variety here.

Perceived as a developing city in many ways, primarily economically in relation to its more financially secure American and European neighbours, Mexico City has its fair share of poverty and associated crime. The simple rule is to stay alert and not to go into parts of the city. Overall this is much like many other cities, it is just more overt here.

There is also a lot of work taking place to counter the pollution created by so many people. The surrounding mountains keep the dirty air over the city unfortunately, which doesn't help. A lot is being done to improve this though with the understanding that it is a global issue.

Mexico City is a fascinating blend of cultures that seem to spill out and mix together, creating a heady combination of styles that gives the city its personality. To see the city in the full throes of life is to savour an amazing experience that will never be forgotten.
