Memphis Overview

Memphis, with a population of over 1 million people, is the largest city in the US state of Tennessee. The fact most associated with the city is that Elvis Presley lived, and died, here but the city does offer much more than that.

Located next to the Mississippi River the city is in the heart of the deep south with a humid climate that can feel muggy and oppressive at times. Best then to take things easy as is the city's wont and sit for a while in a local bar or restaurant eating some authentic southern cuisine and enjoying a nice cool drink. There are many of them in the city and each seems to have its own personality, as well as its own speciality dish!

The city has long been associated with the civil rights movement, having been intrinsically linked with black culture via the slave trade. The city is now a multicultural one, working together to achieve success. The National Civil Rights Museum is here and very popular it is with people wishing to understand the background to a period in American history.

Back to music, which does flow through the city like a lifeblood. Memphis is home of the Blues, the musical genre that created everything we know today. Take a stroll down Beale Street and visit BB King's club where he is often to be found playing the blues himself.

Top Memphis Attractions

Graceland is at the top of most visitors to do lists. Although aimed squarely at the tourist market, with tacky "souvenirs" coming out of its ears it is still a fascinating place to see. Elvis Presley touched the lives of so many people, and continues to do so even today.

Shopping in Memphis

Memphis has the usual blend of mainstream brands and specialist outlets. The city has developed such a number and variety of shops that people from all around the area come to the city in order to buy those hard to source or cutting edge items that lesser places simply do not stock. The shopping experience itself is a wonderful one in Memphis owing to the style of the place, with lovely streets home to some charming shops, and with the cafes all around a days shopping is anything but a chore.

Memphis Sporting Events

Memphis has only one major league sports team, the Memhpis Grizzlies basketball team who play in the NBA. They do have a variety of minor league teams in all the main sports too. Curiously enough Memphis seems to have been a big contributor to the American Wrestling phenomenon, with Steve Austin, The Rock, Hulk Hogan and The Undertaker all coming from the city.
