Malta Overview

Malta is a small island nation in southern Europe, located in the Meditteranean between Italy to the north and Africa to the south. It is made up of three separate islands: Malta, Gozo and Comino, although Malta is by far the main one. The population stands at around 370,000 in total, with around 25,000 on Gozo and just a handful on Comino, primarily farmers.

The area has a long history, dating back several thousand years, primarily due to its location which proved ideal for the passing ships in historic times, enabling restocking before commencing their journey. The resulting variations in architecture make for a fascinating insight into bygone times.

For those wanting to experience the nightlife of Malta there is an eclectic mix of styles and moods available. From the mellow and moody jazz venues that are here through to the very latest club sounds, with top DJ's coming in for weekend events. Paceville and St Julians are the main places to be.

There are also many places to savour the more Maltese elements - with a large number of restaurants offering traditional cuisine and local bars welcoming visitors in to share a drink or two.

Malta is a great place for a relaxing holiday, offering as it does a warm dry climate, lovely beaches and a range of things to do and places to see.

Top Malta Attractions

The walled city of Mdina is well worth a visit. Built around 1000BC originally it was the main city of Malta at that time and stood as a well protected home to the Governor. The streets of the city are narrow, with the buildings seeming to enclose everything, all except for the square in front of the cathedral, the only space to be found here.

Shopping in Malta

Republic Street is the main thoroughfare in Malta, a magnet for tourists with its many shops selling souvenirs and locally produced goods. There are also a number of more varied stores here, providing clothing and the more regular items needed by the locals to live.

Malta Sporting Events

The island offers a range of different sports, with a focus on water based activities, which makes sense considering its location. They do have a national football team too, but it does struggle. Sea fishing is also popular here, and boats can be hired to take a trip out into the Mediterranean.
