Lima Overview

Lima is the capital of Peru in South America. With almost a third of the country's population living here it is very much the focal point of all activity, although this has led to a number of issues that need to be resolved, including excessive pollution with all the traffic here and also the number of shanty towns that sit alongside the more prosperous areas of the city. The desire to be included in what the city is doing is such that people will do almost anything to be here, even if it means living in squalor and deprivation.

In stark contrast to these subcultures the financial district of the city, called San Isidro, is a glorious testament to finance and modern architecture. Matching the very best to be found anywhere in the world the magnificence of these buildings, and the money that they generate is amazing.

On a more cultural note, the historic centre of Lima, with its abundance of 16th and 17th century Spanish architecture is a UNESCO World Heritage Site such is the quality of the area. There are also a number of excellent museums where the history of the city is celebrated, one of the best ones being the National Museum of Anthropology, Archaeology and History.

Lima is a well developed city that has taken great strides to ensure its position in the world economy. As it catches up with itself, taking the time to reintegrate the lesser well off and clean up the environment, the city will get better and better.

Miraflores is the main shopping centre in Peru and is where the main stores are to be found, along with a number of more traditional style markets where the locals sell hand crafted goods, in particular textiles that are very popular here.

Lima Sporting Events

As with most South American countries football is the main sport to follow. And Lima is no exception, with the magnificent Estadio Monumental, capable of holding 80,000 people, home to club side Universatario. The atmosphere here is electric and any visit to the city should involve the football stadium too.
