Las Vegas Overview

Las Vegas, Nevada is the gambling capital of the United States, if not the world such is its popularity.

Taking advantage of the gambling laws in Nevada Las Vegas created itself in the 1930's, and has not looked back since. It is now home to every hotel chain in America, with the main ones having wonderfully creative and extravagant themes. The Venetian for example recreates the waterways of Venice inside it - complete with gondolas! The sheer scale of the hotels cannot be appreciated without seeing them for yourself.

The casinos themselves are vast, air conditioned houses of dreams. People can and do win millions of dollars here, and the hotels are happy to look after their customers, with free drinks and complimentary services on offer to keep people playing in their casino. There are no clocks in the casinos, nor windows, so always wear a watch otherwise you might be in there for days.

What is most amazing about Las Vegas is how it sits there in the middle of the desert, surrounded by this infertile ground it is like a modern oasis, but money and entertainment are its lifeblood rather than water. The place never sleeps going round the clock to please the needs of its visitors, and make a little profit in the process of course, but we wouldn't have it any other way.

If the city and its style were to be compared to anything else, trying to gain some measure of where it sits culturally, it would stand next to the halcyon days of Rome, where hedonism dominated life.
