Kiev Overview

Kiev is the capital of Ukraine, as well as being its largest city with a population in the region of 2.6 million. It is to be found in the north of the country, sitting along the banks of the River Dnieper.

The city is also one of the oldest in Eastern Europe, being founded around the 5th century as a trading post, aided by its location on the river. With such a long history it is no surprise to find some glorious architecture here, although quite a lot of it has been lost due to the many battles that have been fought here over the centuries.

One of the first things that strikes the visitor to Kiev is the proliferation of trees and greenery. There are many parks and gardens throughout the city that create a very welcoming environment, contrasting somewhat with most common expectations of the city.

The city is what makes the whole country tick it must be said, being at the centre of all the main activities - cultural, commercial and industrial. With some of the best Universities in Europe here they are developing a strong base of people to take on new technologies and manage the businesses of tomorrow. Showing some significant foresight the city is also developing quickly as a tourist destination, acknowledging the new desires for a greater "experience" and welcoming the visitors who can bring lots of money to the city, thus providing the means to regenerate further.

Top Kiev Attractions

There are so many different things to see here, one of the main ones is "The Golden Gate", originally constructed in the 11th century as the main entrance to the city. Such was its design and strength that it was never broken by marauders, keeping everyone out. As a symbol of the city and its history it stands proudly, having been restored to some of its previous glory and housing also a fascinating museum.

Shopping in Kiev

The historical centre of Kiev is where a fantastic array of shops can be found, with some glorious boutiques and top brand names here. Also here is a shopping mall called the "City Center", again home to some top brands and the place where the great and the good do their shopping.

Kiev Sporting Events

The city of Kiev has a proliferation of indoor activities, no doubt determined by the cold winters experienced here. Billiards and bowling are particularly well liked. The city does have a very good football team too in Dinamo Kiev. They are a strong side who have a good reputation across Europe from their UEFA Cup and Champions League exploits.
