Dusseldorf Overview
The city of Dusseldorf is situated in western Germany on the River Rhine, with a history dating back to the 12 century if not earlier. From its position as a trading centre in medieval times it developed and grew, taking advantage of its location to become a commercial force.
Following a number of changes to the city and the environment surrounding it, Dusseldorf found itself needing to develop once again, and this it did in dramatically successful style, turning itself into a centre for fashion, finance, telecommunications and media. This blend of industries and the money they create have led Dusseldorf once again to a position of commercial dominance.
The history of the city has not been lost though, and there are many cultural aspects of the city, such as the many museums, galleries and old buildings, that are reminders of the past, as well as pointers to the future, reminding the Dusseldorf citizens of their fantastic background.
The nightlife here is also a mix of styles, from the ultra modern to the very traditional. The sheer breadth of options is breathtaking, with bars and restaurants seemingly everywhere. The Altstadt, for example, has over 260 bars and restaurants, known worldwide as the "longest bar in the world". There are also a great number of clubs offering live entertainment and top DJ's until the early hours of the morning.
