Copenhagen Overview

The attractive, modern city of Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark is one of the top cities for a short break, and has enough going on to make it a viable choice for a longer holiday too.

With a reputation as one of the coolest and laid back cities in Europe, not to mention a thriving cultural scene, excellent shopping areas, exciting architecture and a beautiful location close to wide sandy beaches and lovely countryside, Copenhagen is a city that seems to have everything going for it.

Whether you are planning to visit Copenhagen for a romantic break, explore somewhere family friendly, or want to live it up and enjoy some of Europe's most sophisticated nightlife with a group of friends, Copenhagen is a great choice, and after only a few hours of exploring, you will be glad you came.

From the iconic statues to the fun filled amusement parks to the shabby commune of Christiania, there are different faces to Copenhagen that combine to make it a great city to relax and enjoy.

Top Copenhagen Attractions

Perhaps the most popular attraction in Copenhagen is the famous Tivoli Gardens amusement park in the centre of the city. Here you can enjoy a number of rides, or walk through some pleasant parkland. The Stroget shopping area is close by, and the park provides a great escape from the bustle of the department stores.

In the centre of the harbour, the statue of Hans Christian Anderson's Little Mermaid is one of the most photographed places in Copenhagen, and there are numerous boat trips out to the statue to help you get a closer look.

Christiania is an autonomous hippie community based in a former army base close to the centre of Copenhagen. It has become a popular nightlife centre in recent years buoyed up on the fact that the use of marijuana is effectively legal within the bounds of the community.

Shopping in Copenhagen

The main area for shoppers in Copenhagen is known as Stroget, and this is where you will find the largest collection of designer boutiques and department stores all connected by pedestrian streets. The largest store is Magasin du Nord, which sells pretty much anything.

If you prefer to negotiate over price, and like the whole market culture, head to Israel Plads or Gammel Street on a Saturday morning, when the city's two biggest street markets take place. These events see a mix of stalls selling everything from food to second hand clothes, and provide an interesting experience.

Denmark's reputation as a fairly expensive place to shop is largely due to the 25% sales tax that is applied to everything. It is not always completely clear whether this is included, so always ask before you buy anything.

Copenhagen Sporting Events

Although not amongst the premier league of sporting cities in Europe, Copenhagen still has plenty to watch and participate in. The national team and local favourites FC Copenhagen share the impressive national stadium, and enjoy comparative success in both European and domestic competitions.

There are around 80 golf courses around the city that offer good quality, modern facilities, and con be booked in advance, while sailing is popular from Copenhagen harbour where there are a number of schools on hand to arrange a day trip or even a course should you be interested.
