Brisbane Overview

Capital of Queensland, Brisbane is the gateway to the tropical Sunshine State of Australia and the home of around one and a half million people. Arguably, it is the best point of entry to Australia for people who want to visit the famous Gold Coast, or head north to the coastal resorts close to Cairns or to begin a holiday exploring the offshore islands of the Great Barrier Reef on a diving trip or a cruise.

Brisbane has a great climate all year round, due to its near tropical location, and the great weather is boosted by the fact that Brisbane is one of the most important cultural centres in the whole of Australia, and has lots of theatres, museums and galleries, along with plenty of leafy parks to stroll through.

When you consider that the city's nickname is Bris Vegas, you can take it as read that the nightlife in Brisbane is one of the main reasons for paying the city a visit, and there are plenty of bars and clubs to enjoy during the evening. If you fancy a flutter, there are plenty of casinos in Brisbane to choose from for when you want to get out of the sun for a while and take your chances.

Brisbane is an excellent addition to any tour of Australia, and a fine city to visit in its own right. It offers plenty for all travellers to see and do. If you need any further recommendation, bear in mind that in a recent poll, a majority of Australians said that given the choice, they would chose to live in Brisbane, and once you've been there, you'll soon see why.

Leave Brisbane and you are soon in the Australian holiday capital - The Gold Coast. Home to many of the most impressive tourist attractions in the whole country, this popular part of Australia offers the chance to visit theme parks including Sea World, Warner Brothers theme park, and even Wet and Wild near Brisbane, where you can enjoy the fun and sun on the water slides.

Further away top the north, you can explore areas of tropical rainforest, sail on the Great Barrier Reef and get up close and personal with amazing sea creatures on a SCUBA safari on the reef.

Shopping in Brisbane

In Brisbane itself, there is the usual mix of high street names and large shopping malls where you can stock up on all your holiday essentials such as sun tan lotion and swimwear. The various resort towns that stretch out along the Gold Coast away from Brisbane offer smaller boutiques, and craft markets where you can pick up locally produced goods alongside the well-known brands.

Brisbane Sporting Events

Brisbane offers a unique opportunity to both watch and participate in almost any activity that you can conceive of. With the spectacular Great Barrier Reef to the north offering swimming diving and sailing, and the jungles and outback desert inland from Brisbane giving you the chance to experience various kinds of trekking, there is plenty to keep you occupied.

As far as watching goes, there are a choice of sports to watch in Brisbane, including a couple of Australia Rules Football teams, and rugby sides offering some entertaining diversions.
