United Airlines Increase Fares

Published: 08/05/08

Last week United Airlines raised their fares on domestic flights across the board meaning typical return flights to Seattle from New York would cost an additional USD50. Since then most airlines have quickly followed with fare increases on most of their routes.

The rise in the airfares has been due to the increase in fuel costs that many of the airlines have had to bear. Carriers other than United Airlines have introduced price rises on at least half of their routes, with many of its competitors feeling the need to follow suit. Fuel charges for the airlines account for a larger overhead than previously, resulting in many being forced to increase air fares for them to remain operational.

More recently, one of United Airlines competitors has also increased their air fares due to the rise of fuel charges whilst another has withdrawn its charges to become more competitive.
