A Swedish boy suffering with croup travelled on a Thai Airways flight to Brisbane when it diverted to Sydney for a stop which was unrelated to the boys death.

Ambulance officers in Sydney said the boy had been suffering from the viral infection croup. After the aircraft landed in Sydney on Tuesday the boy went into cardiac arrest and died shortly after. The emergency crew was called to Sydney’s international airport after the boy started suffering around 9.30pm on Tuesday.

An ambulance spokesman at the scene said the boy had been suffering from croup which is a common infection of the throat and the windpipe and usually occurs in children aged under three.
