Northwest Airlines who are being supported by the Air Line Pilots Association, filed a federal lawsuit seeking approval of a redesigned pension plan for its pilots today.

The new Air Line Pilots Association proposed plan has been accepted by Northwest Airlines and was intended to provide an unbiased distribution of retirement income for the airline's 4,500 pilots.

Northwest Airlines have filed the action after some of its longer-serving pilots argued that the plan is unlawful. Northwest Airlines have asked the federal court to determine if the plan meets all legal requirements.

Complications regarding the airline's benefit pension plans arose after the company filed for bankruptcy, where it froze plans instead of ending them. The company said it was able to preserve more than $2 billion in pension benefits.
