Heathrow to Expand

Amid controversy and protests, Heathrow airport is looking to build and develop a 3rd runway and 6th terminal. The British government is looking to build the extra capability into the airport as airline travel is becoming more and more popular.
Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly announced that Heathrow – Europe’s busiest airport must continue to grow so that it can handle the continued growth of airline travel. She also added that the economy could be seriously hit if the airport failed to keep up with other country’s international airports and could result in huge job losses within the United Kingdom.
The road to the new runway may not however be all smooth sailing as there are many groups waiting in line to protest against the move. The runway’s critics are arguing that the expansion program could seriously damage the environment, local wildlife and local residents. If airline travel continues to improve then the airport must expand to cope as it is a central hub for airlines offer flights to the United States and other worldwide destinations.
