The Air France-KLM Boeing 747 had just taken off from OR Tambo International airport on Sunday when 19 minutes into the flight it had to turn around and come back again due to the aircraft experiencing problems with its left engine.
Only two days before the problem occurred, the aircraft had had a routine maintenance check at Schiphol International Airport in Amsterdam. The general manager of the airline, Yeshwant Pawar said: “This was the aircraft’s last hangar visit where a maintenance check was done. All our 747 KLM aircraft also have detailed Federal Aviation Authority inspections after 600 hours of flying. On this particular aircraft, a check of this nature was carried out on December 28.” The aircraft has since been flown back to Amsterdam and has been given the all clear.
