The accident happened at San Francisco International Airport yesterday. The United Airlines 757 aircraft backed into a Skywest commuter jet just outside the terminal as it was being towed into a hanger. No one was injured in the accident.
Luckily the United Airways plane did not have any passengers aboard because it was being towed into the hanger for some routine maintenance work, at the same time the Skywest plane was backing away from the gate and the two planes collided. The Skywest plane was carrying 56 passengers who had to be put up in nearby hotels until they could be placed on flights the next day.
A Spokeswoman for United Airlines, Robin Urbanski said: “The wings of both planes were damaged in the accident.” She also said: "We are conducting a full investigation to see how this happened and make sure it doesn't happen again," Urbanski said.
Ian Gregor, a spokesman with the FAA, said the accident happened in the ramp area, which is not controlled by the FAA. "Airlines are responsible for that," Gregor said. "They back their own planes out."
