Qatar Airways wants to use natural gas

Published: 09/08/08

Qatar Airways have made an agreement with the main people in the aviation, fuel and educational sectors that will make history.  The deal is to investigate running the aircrafts on natural gases.

Qatar Airways makes a good candidate for the trials of natural gas for fuel because they fly daily routes from Nairobi and Dar es Salaam to Doha with onward connections to a network of over 80 destinations.

If the natural gas fuel works Qatar Airways will be the first commercial airline in the world to operate flights using the gas-to-liquids kerosene fuel.  The new technology that can make this possible will help flights become more environmentally friendly, helping to significantly reduce carbon emissions and impact on climate change.

Qatar Airways has been joined by Qatar Petroleum, Shell, Airbus, Rolls Royce, Qatar Science and Technology Park and Qatar fuel company Woqod in the intensive study to be carried out over the next few years.
